Antique Chinoiserie Gilt Lacquered Wood Panel<\/span><\/h1>\n

An exceptional late 18th century Qianlong black and
\ngold lacquer hand painted Chinese export panel.
\nThe scene depicts the former rural life of the area.
\nPeople engaged in silk processing.
\nA child with his father and grandmother, as well as a woman inside the house (pagoda)
\nWith floral decorations, set in an idyllic landscape on the riverbank.

Depicting Sericulture, or silk farming – the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. The rectangular panel is richly decorated in gold and red lacquer with women engaged in silk production in a farmhouse by a river. Their faces and hands picked out in silver lacquer, the rocky landscape with pine, bamboo, chrysanthemum, willow and other trees, all against a black ground and contained within a repeating foliate border. The figure on the left hand side is weaving the silk – the finished product – using a loom.<\/p>\n

In The Decorative Arts of the China Trade: Paintings, furnishings and exotic curiosities‘, Carl L.<\/p>\n

Crossman discusses the depictions of China’s large silk industry in watercolours and gouaches. He explains that they: ‚have handsome landscape backgrounds and show in great detail an idealised view of the pavilions and gardens of the residence of a wealthy Chinese, rather than the place of manufacture‘ (Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade: Paintings, furnishings and exotic curiosities‘, Antique Collectors‘ Club, 1991, p. 180). An example of such a scene is presented in this panel.<\/p>\n
